SpaceShipTwo First Feathered Flight
Ok, so I’m done complaining about airline seats for now. Here is some high-flying pornage for you to enjoy.
You have to admit, like it or not that the face of space travel is changing. The shuttle is
winding down coming to an abrupt halt this summer and these are the new guys in town. Lean, mean and commercialized seems like a lot is changing.
Check out the chase plane for example. NASA used T-38 burning a few thousand dead-dinasours a second and these guys have some aerobatic pilot moon-lighting as chase. Pay attention as the chase plane zips by while SpaceShipTwo is landing. The audio is something out of the movie Airplane!
I do love that some things aren’t changing. Like there seem to be a half dozen people on the radio with a very formal procedure calling out “check”, “initate lock”, “lock started”, “lock complete”…..Looks like we won’t be seeing space cowboys flying a worn out Winnebago any time soon.
I also like that the stole/borrowed (hell, they probably bought it) the super fancy tracking cameras for the in-flight video. Where can I get one of those? I would love to bring one to OSH. You can always dream right?
It looks like product placement is coming to space travel too. You know where corporations pay thousands (err millions?) to have a Coke/Pepsi can or a specific new car into a movie. Check out Matt Stinemetze, Program Manager of Scaled Composites. He’s sporting a “Rare Bear Racing” T-shirt. How much you think these guys will charge me to wear an AirplanePorn T-shirt? Maybe I can get the AirplanePorn logo on the instrument panel so it will show up in the cool in-flight cockpit shots
Alright here is the video:
Oh, BTW – Props goes out to Marilyn Dash who I had interviewed a while back for posting this on her Facebook page. You can catch her on Facebook and Twitter and on her web site: http://rubyredracing.com/
